What Is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy is a procedure that saves teeth that would otherwise need to be removed. Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains the tooth's nerves, blood vessels, and lymph vessels. When the pulp becomes inflamed or infected—often due to deep decay, a crack, or trauma—it must be removed to save the tooth.

During root canal treatment, we carefully remove the damaged pulp, clean and disinfect the canal, then fill it with a biocompatible material. In most cases, we'll place a crown over the treated tooth to protect it and restore its full strength.

Many patients worry that root canal treatment will be painful, but the truth is exactly the opposite. Root canal therapy alleviates pain by removing the damaged tissue that's causing your discomfort.
