When You Need Bone Grafting

At Hunterdon Family Dental Care, we perform bone grafts in our Lebanon office to help preserve and rebuild the bone that supports your teeth and future dental implants.

Socket Preservation After Extraction

When a tooth is removed, the bone that once supported it begins to shrink. If you're planning to replace that tooth with an implant, we'll place a bone graft in the extraction site right away. This is called socket preservation, and it maintains the bone structure you'll need for a successful implant down the road.

Rebuilding Bone Lost to Gum Disease

We always do everything we can to save your natural teeth. When periodontal disease has caused bone loss around a tooth, we can help restore it. Using our advanced dental laser, we carefully remove calculus (tartar) from under the gums and in hard-to-reach areas. Then we place a bone graft to replace the lost bone. The laser also prepares the area for optimal healing and helps the gum tissue reattach above the graft.

Will a bone graft hurt?+

Most patients experience minimal discomfort. We numb the area completely during the procedure, and any tenderness afterward can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Many patients are surprised by how comfortable the process is.

How long does it take for a bone graft to heal?+

Healing time varies depending on the size and location of the graft. Socket preservation grafts typically integrate in 3–6 months, which is when an implant can be placed. We'll monitor your progress and let you know when you're ready for the next step.

Do I need a bone graft if I'm getting an implant?+

Not always, but often. If a tooth has been missing for a while or bone was lost during extraction, a graft helps ensure there's enough healthy bone to support the implant. We'll evaluate your specific situation and recommend what's best for long-term success.
